The contrast between his pants legs adds visual interest to his person. I can assume that there wasn't to much going on around him to keep the viewers eyes. So why not. This reminds me of the 80s when when would cut open the crew collars of their sweat shirts. The fact the he appears sweaty in the adds to the second photograph adds to the visual correlation.
